James Carlisle Overstreet ‘67: Always a gentleman

Everyone starts somewhere in their career, but how many of his undergraduate Kappa Alpha brothers thought James Carlisle Overstreet ‘67 would become a judge?

“My favorite hangout when I was at the house was the TV room,” he says, but sometimes it wasn’t only the feelings of camaraderie that created warmth in the chapter house. “I remember burning furniture in the fireplace to keep a party going,” he laughed.

When James was at Georgia, KA was known as a “great fraternity” and the members were highly thought of on campus and they had an impact on him. “All were great leaders,” James explained. “I still have lifetime relationships” with the brothers, all these years later.

James created a noteworthy career and life, “I went to UGA in 1963 and graduated from Augusta College (now University) in 1967,” he said. “I went on to graduate from Mercer Law School in 1970 and practiced law in Augusta until 1991 when I became a Superior Court Judge. I became a Senior Superior Court Judge in 2017.”

“I have two boys Jim, a lawyer in Augusta, and Baker, an artist in New York City. Their mother, Shara, passed away in 2008. I married Janet Eastburn in 2014 and we live in Augusta, GA,” he said.

James’ favorite KA tradition that he hopes never goes away is “being a gentleman,” and that extended to his recollections about the past. When asked if there were any good road trip stories from his days in the chapter, he demurred. “Not that I can tell” was his response.

Kappa Alpha Order is Grateful for You

As Kappa Alpha Order brothers, we share a passion for the brotherhood that contributed to our personal development, our relationships, and our lives as students and far beyond to our roles as husbands, fathers, professionals, volunteers, neighbors, and friends.

We can’t overestimate the true meaning of adding your name to the ranks of our alumni donors. We want to share our continued gratitude to those brothers listed on the honor roll HERE who have graciously given back to Kappa Alpha Order this holiday season.

The Benefits of Brotherhood

As you know, being a part of a fraternity offers more than just a social experience—as brothers, we gained a sense of community, a place to call home, preparation for post-grad life, and the life-changing, lifelong benefits of friendship, leadership, and shared values.

  • What do 85% of the executives of Fortune 500 companies and 80% of United States Presidents since 1900 have in common? According to Fraternity Advisor, they were all members of Greek organizations during college.
  • Fraternity and sorority membership helps young men and women cultivate leadership skills, gain a sense of social identity, and learn to work well with others. Fraternities and sororities not only offer the context to develop these skills but, just as importantly, can often help students work toward future internships and job opportunities. Employers like seeing the documented leadership experience that fraternity life can provide.
  • Networking is an integral part of the college experience and Greek life provides one of the strongest foundations for social interfacing with a network of peers. Greek organizations help build networks that often prove beneficial to students when looking for internships, employment, recommendations, or employees.

Kappa Alpha Order takes young men and shapes them into functioning adults through leadership in the fraternity, charity work within the community, and networking for post-grad life. Greek life is an essential part of any collegiate system.
